Speakers would fuckin explode, man, waking up people’s brains. There’s no other way to describe it. Those are the words. Paul D. Hudson, legendarily known around the globe as “H.R.”– “Human Rights” is the frontman of the American punk band Bad Brains, one of the greatest hardcore bands of all time! It was an innovative style that revolutionized the punk and hardcore music scenes by blending an aggressive mix of metal and punk rock with reggae rhythms. The legendary artist, H.R., helped shape their distinctive sound with his unique vocal talent and energy.
Last April, I looked forward to catching H.R. at the Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa. Days after I heard about the show, I also learned of his torturous condition with the announcement of a tour cancellation. For some time now, H.R. has been significantly affected by horrific and painful headaches caused by SUNCT syndrome (Short-lasting Unilateral Neuralgiform headache attacks with Conjunctival injection and Tearing). A very rare and excruciating condition. As a result, this has altered his quality of life, causing H.R. to cancel shows and tours.
July 28, 2024 at The Observatory
When a tour for H.R. was announced in July, I knew I had to be there at at least one of the venues, camera in hand. H.R. did an in-store signing at Dr. Strange Records in Rancho Cucamonga earlier in the day before performing a delightful and inspiring set at The Santa Ana Observatory that evening. With a stage composed of talented musicians, the music began at 9:30, creating the most uplifting vibe, and shortly after, we were in the presence of the legend himself. He picked up his ukulele, and the magic began. Standing room only, it was all about peace and love. He covered many classics, including “I and I Survive“, and a beautiful “Happy Birthday My Son” off his first solo album, It’s About Luv. Also in his set, was “Give Thanks“, and “Attitude PMA”. I am so thankful for such an outstanding evening, for the music and the love that he, along with his bandmates, shared with everyone that night.
H.R. seemed to be in good spirits, smiling and shaking hands with his adoring fans in the crowd as he walked to the merch booth after his performance to sign posters. The line was long, but it was worth the wait. Patience.
Thankfully, I remembered to bring one of my photographs. Carefully tucked between the pages of a “Manifestation” booklet, I removed the limited edition linen print, and a gold pen inside my bag for him to sign with. He was kind, sweet, and happily posed for a couple of pictures too. Grateful for the media accommodations arranged by his management, I bought a tour poster beautifully hand-drawn and colored by his bandmate Sean McLaren, which H.R. happily signed for me as well. Additionally, I also had some enjoyable conversations with his bandmates, who signed my tour poster before I left. It was a beautiful and inspiring night full of moments I am so thankful to have been able to appreciate in person. I am grateful to H.R. for sharing his music and love again with all of us.
Despite the trials he faces, the energy, the music, and the genuine connection he fostered with his fans made it clear: H.R.’s influence remains as potent and gold as ever. As I left the venue, I carried with me the memories of a great show and a deep appreciation for the artistry of a man who has given so much to music. Here’s to H.R., the icon who continues to inspire and uplift, no matter the obstacles.
