Kristin Hersh Rocks Pioneertown

Kristin Hersh made a stop at Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown, CA on September 6th. Five nights before, Hersh and her band Throwing Muses played the Daydream Fest in Pasadena along with the Pixies and the Cure.

Fred Abong, bassist in Throwing Muses and Belly, opened with a solo set armed only with his electric guitar.  Thirty minutes later Hersh took the stage with 50 Foot Wave bandmate Rob Ahlerson on drums and Muses bandmate Fred Abong on bass. They proceeded to tear through over a dozen songs, the majority from her latest album Possible Dust Clouds, with a few Throwing Muses numbers.

In contrast to her flowery dress and chunky penny loafers, Hersh’s music was loud and her guitar playing dissonant and aggressive: she pounded her fist above the strings and played slide by using a screwdriver she kept between the tuning pegs and furiously running it up and down the neck of her guitar. She sang as if deep in thought, staring out over the audience.  After every song she’d break the trance and laugh and joke with her audience. Hersh wrapped up the night with a two song encore.
